1. The Quarterback Derby is Far From Settled
The biggest question on Sooner Nation’s collective mind is which quarterback will be the signal-caller for Lincoln Riley’s offense when the season begins. And, many hoped today’s game would give a clear sign.
Baker Mayfield was ten for thirteen for 176 yards and a touchdown, but threw two interceptions. Even though his completion percentage was 76%, with a resulting NCAA quarterback rating (QBR) of 185, the two interceptions were very ill-advised throws, especially one where he threw into triple coverage. Mayfield must cut down on those mistakes if he hopes to sustain success.
Unfortunately, Trevor Knight’s regression continues. He completed six of thirteen passes for 70 yards, no passing touchdowns and an interception. A forty-six percent completion percentage and atrocious 81 QBR are not going to cut it in an offense that requires consistently accurate throws. Ditto for Thomas, who did not fare much better than Knight. But, Justice Hansen made the best of his opportunity in limited action: he completed all five of his passes and showed very good velocity and accuracy on his throws.
In the aftermath of today’s spring game, Baker Mayfield leads the OU quarterback derby, although his performance did not cement him as the frontrunner for the starter job come September. Trevor Knight’s poor performance is a step back, and even his hold on the backup job is not a sure thing due to Justice Hansen’s solid performance.
If nothing else, this game suggests the coaching staff should give Hansen more reps and a shot to be the backup. But, there is lots of practice time left, so the situation can change between now and September.
