1. Will the Defense be the Best Unit on the Team?

The answer today is, maybe. With new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp at the helm, the sky is the limit for the very tenacious Tigers defense.

Last season was a brutal one for the Auburn defense. They showed signs of ability, but against more powerful offenses, the Tigers once again found themselves having to outscore the other team because the defense couldn’t stop them.

As a result, the Tigers were forced go another route with their defensive coordinator, and were fortunate enough to sign one of the best defensive coordinators in the country.

Muschamp’s first job as defensive coordinator is to efficiently use all of his resources. Although Auburn’s defense played very poorly at times last season, they have some of the most talented defensive players in the country. Carl Lawson returns from ACL surgery after missing all of last season and could be a double-digit sack performer and Montravius Adams may be the best defensive lineman in the SEC.

Those two will be the leaders of the unit that should be the best in the Malzahn era and take the pressure off the offense that is replacing their starting quarterback, running back and No. 1 receiver.

Saying all this, a main focal point of this Saturday’s spring game will be the defense and how they handle Auburn’s high-powered offense. Specifically, I’d watch for things that Muschamp does differently, compared to years past, and see how his players respond.

Best case scenario, you see some very dominant play, some excited players, and a very enthusiastic Muschamp, all the while allowing the offense some time for improvement as well.
