The quarterback competition at Ohio State has been the most talked about position battle in the history of position battles, but there was no competition this spring with Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett limited after undergoing surgery last year.
That meant it was all Cardale Jones with the competition getting underway in earnest in fall camp where Meyer hopes to have a starter identified midway through camp. Jones’ story is well-documented.
He was the No. 3 quarterback last year but became the starter after Barrett broke his ankle in the Michigan win and started the Big Ten Championship Game against Wisconsin that got the Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff. He then beat Alabama in the semifinal and Oregon in the national championship for the most impressive first three wins to begin his or anyone’s career.
I want to see how much he’s matured as a passer and field general since his historic three-game stretch last season after getting starter’s reps this spring. Those extra reps could prove beneficial come August if he’s named the starter for the regular season opener.
