The Defense Will Be Fine

It is difficult to gauge defensive performance during a spring game. Coaches like to protect their quarterbacks and any other star offensive players, so defenders tend to dial back on the intensity. A big concern heading into Saturday’s spring game was how Kevin Steele’s defense would fare, considering Steele must now fill the huge shoes of the departed John Chavis.

Given the offensive feast that was the LSU spring game, it would not be unexpected to think the defense needs work. Statistically, the defense did fine, combining for five sacks and one interception. Sophomore defensive tackle Maquedius Bain collected three of the sacks, while sophomore corner Kevin Toliver II snagged the game’s lone interception.

And fans should understand that a lot of reserves played in this game, which allows the coaches to gauge the talent depth. And that may be a concern, considering that the starting offense racked up 366 yards against the defensive reserves.
