4. Plugging the holes
Every team in the country knows that a good deep ball gave Alabama’s defense fits last year. The question was what would Alabama do about it.
After A-Day the team already appears to have better depth in the secondary. Of course considering the position battles that took place in that game it will be hard to really judge this unit until it takes the field for real.
Skepticism aside, Alabama managed to shut down the passing game rather effectively even with corner back Cyrus Jones sitting out. The defense as a whole managed to snag six interceptions and Maurice Smith even returned one of them to the house.
The secondary still gave up some big plays, but with a little more practice (and the return of Jones) then Alabama’s coverage should buy its pass rush enough time to get home.
