And the Eagles managed to get to 9-3 their first year in FBS.

Rushing for lots of yards in an option and rush-heavy system like Georgia Southern’s is one thing, but to average more than eight and a half yards doing it is incredible. Breida also was a sophomore as he did it, and despite the rush-heavy offense, he still managed nearly 100 receiving yards and another touchdown.

Taking all of this into account, Georgia Southern should be in pretty great shape going forward in FBS play with two more years of Breida at running back. And Fritz could move up the coaching ladder pretty quickly.

Matt Breida

Junior, Georgia Southern Eagles

This might not be fair given the Georgia Southern Eagles’ track record as a running team. But Matt Breida carried them in 2014 with so many new things facing the program.

Willie Fritz took over as the new head coach, the football program had to enter its first year in FBS play, and Breida was a pretty inexperienced running back himself. All that happened was Breida rushing for 1,485 yards on 171 attempts for 17 touchdowns and more than eight and a half yards per carry.
