Charlie Strong: Wedge Antilles
Don’t worry everybody, we are getting to Luke Skywalker. But first, Charlie Strong. Yes, he’s Wedge Antilles because too often they were passed over on positions they had rightfully earned.
Wedge was under-appreciated in the Battle of Yavin to destroy the first Death Star. But he was one of the few to remain alive at the end and took some TIE-fighters out along with that. Luke Skywalker might not blow it up without him.
And in the third film, Wedge is asked to follow Lando as the Gold Leader. Lando had the skills to be the leader, but come on. That guy was a gambler and businessman who fell into the Rebellion.
Wedge had worked his way up and earned respect by his efforts with the Rebellion in the Battle of Yavin, but he only got to be Red Leader. Still, he once again proved himself, doing exactly what was needed to play his part in blowing up the Second Death Star.
Afterward, he became recognized on the same elite status as everybody else.
Charlie Strong was the same.
Strong had dominant defenses at the University of Florida and was THE reason Urban Meyer won two national titles there. But he kept getting passed over for jobs he had rightfully earned, until finally the Louisville Cardinals came calling. And Strong flourished in the rebuilding project of Louisville.
So finally, after commanding more respect than anybody, he finally got his big chance with the Texas Longhorns. He is now where Wedge was finally able to get to at the end of Return of the Jedi.
