Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson is transferring from Notre Dame and will be eligible to play immediately.

The rumors wouldn’t go away and now the rumors have turned into fact as Notre Dame senior quarterback Everett Golson is transferring to play his final season elsewhere, according to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy.

Golson has had an up and down career at Notre Dame where he led the Fighting Irish to the BCS National Championship Game as a redshirt freshman. Notre Dame didn’t win the game against Alabama but it appeared as if a star was born at one of college football’s most prestigious programs.

Unfortunately for he and for Notre Dame, Golson missed the entire 2013 season due to academic reasons but returned for the 2014 season and got off to a hot start. Golson led the Irish to a 6-0 start with 20 combined touchdowns and four interceptions.

He came within one play of upsetting the defending champions at Florida State but a penalty nullified the go-ahead touchdown and Golson and Notre Dame suffered their first loss and things became unhinged for Golson the rest of the way.

Notre Dame would go 1-4 to finish the regular season, with the lone win coming against Navy, as Golson struggled with ball security and he turned the ball over at an alarming rate, like the four interceptions he had in the loss to Arizona State.

Malik Zaire, who is now the unquestioned starter at Notre Dame, split time with Golson in the team’s bowl win against LSU, and that was the genesis for the transfer rumors for Golson who was only 6-of-11 passing for 90 yards in the game.

With schools like Texas, South Carolina, LSU among others in need of a quarterback like Golson, he should be a highly coveted free agent who will be eligible to play immediately after graduating this spring.
