For quite some time, Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina Gamecocks had complete control of Dabo Swinney’s Clemson Tigers. South Carolina had won five straight against Clemson from 2009 to 2013.
But then came last year, and Clemson blew out South Carolina 35-17 as part of the beating the ACC gave the SEC the last weekend of the regular season.
Now, going into this year, both teams are in odd situations. South Carolina is in complete limbo under Spurrier, where we aren’t completely sure if they’re rebuilding or not. Clemson is in that exact same odd boat given that they lost tons of talent but had a great recruiting class and should be fine at quarterback.
All of this means the season could go either way for both of them, but when they meet in the final game of the regular season, all bets are off. And that will make this game more interesting than ever.
They say in rivalry games records go out the window. In this particular case for this year, there is about a 100 percent chance of that happening.
What is there not to like about a toss-up in-state rivalry game between two major programs?
