This was always a very underrated friendly rivalry. After all, Oxford, Miss. is an hour away from the Bluff City, and these are areas that are the heart of the Mississippi Delta that shaped lots of the culture this country is known for.
And Ole Miss many times played games in Memphis.
But last year, despite the game being a blowout, all of a sudden made things more interesting. We know the Rebels are expected to be really good once again under Hugh Freeze. Justin Fuente, meanwhile, is expected to keep the Memphis Tigers at the heights they reached last year in an unprecedented season for the football program.
The end result appears as if it could be an extremely exciting match-up between to delta schools less than an hour apart from each other in a friendly rivalry. And having the game played in Memphis makes for a strong chance for this to be an exciting game.
The Tigers are one of the Group of Five teams that could be thinking about a New Years Six bowl game. Ole Miss is one of the many SEC teams vying for a spot in the College Football Playoff. This could at the very least be a resume game for them.
And it could also be a major trap game.
