Final Thoughts

The Purdue Boilermakers should be sightly improved everywhere on the field and significantly improved on the offensive line. All of that should make for even more improvement as a football team, which means turning those close losses into wins and getting into more close games.

Purdue will not be great on either side of the ball, but they can be good enough to put together a decent season and vindicate Hazell.

Hazell’s conservative philosophy helps the most because of special teams. Having such a good field goal kicker can make a huge difference, so that should change things significantly this year.

Prediction

Even with the improvement, a bowl game appears to be a long-shot this year.

Purdue fans have a right to expect at least five wins this year, and 5-7 is another two-game improvement under Hazell. They should beat Indiana, Indiana State, and Illinois at home. With Virginia Tech, Nebraska, and Minnesota, who they lost to by a point last year, all at home, and Northwestern and Marshall on the road, at least to of those games should be wins.

They will all be difficult, but the wins are possible.

So 5-7 can be the baseline. Winning three of those five should get them to 6-6, which would mean a bowl game and an over-achieving season.

But even if that does not happen, improvement is taking place at Purdue.
