Bryce Petty is gone after a pair of top-10 finishes in the Heisman vote the last two seasons as he quarterbacked the Baylor Bears to their best two-year stretch in program history. While Petty is with the New York Jets trying to win the starting quarterback job from Geno Smith his successor, Seth Russell, looks to pick up right where he left off.

Russell filled in admirably for an injured Petty against Northwestern St. last year and completed 16-of-25 passes for 438 yards and five touchdowns, so it looks like he’s the next star to run Art Briles’ quarterback-friendly offense. Helping his cause is Corey Coleman who led the Bears with 64 receptions for 1,119 yards and 11 touchdowns despite missing the first three games of the year.

Cannon was one of the best true freshmen in the country last year when he finished third among first-year players with 1,030 yards on 58 receptions for a staggering 17.76 yards per catch average and his eight touchdowns were the most by any freshman receiver.

The two receivers should top the 1,000-yard barrier with little trouble and make sure Russell’s first year as the starter in Waco is a successful one.
