Another Poor Season Will Cause Steve Spurrier to “Retire”

Steve Spurrier may still be the toast of SEC Media Days, but his bubbly has lost its fizz on the field with his team. Last year South Carolina was bad…like reverting back to pre-Holtz bad. They were one narrow victory over Miami in a bowl game that no one has heard of from having a non-winning season.

For a Spurrier team, that’s bad.

The Gamecocks couldn’t play defense to save their lives, finishing 91st in the nation by giving up an average of 30.4 points per game. They may be better this season, but not enough to save Spurrier from certain doom.

Of course, nobody at South Carolina is going on the record to say Spurrier is on the hot seat or to even suggest that he’ll be fired, but you can bet after this season is over those closed-door meetings where he’s told “it’s time to retire…now” will be going on.

The school will do everything possible to make it look like the Ol’ Ball Coach is leaving on his own terms, but the Gamecocks’ performance on the field will tell a different story.
