Head Coach Charlie Strong indicated earlier in the summer that both quarterbacks will get a chance to play in the opener at Notre Dame, leaving little security behind Swoopes to keep the job long-term. Not entirely a surprise for the junior who capped off the regular season with a four interception performance against TCU which Texas lost 38-10.

Swoopes won’t have as long of a leash in 2015, and Heard is already breathing down his neck. With even a remotely impressive performance in split time against Notre Dame, Heard could wind up being the starter.

Tyrone Swoopes

Quarterback, Texas

If you follow the Longhorns football program closely, especially as recently as this offseason, you’d agree that there should be an asterisk next to Swoopes’ name as the starter.

It looks as though Swoopes will earn the opening day job by default, only to give redshirt freshman Jerrod Heard more time to develop before ultimately taking over likely around mid-season. Swoopes left a lot to be desired after a mediocre 2014 campaign where he stared 12 games, throwing for 2,409 yards and 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
