Heisman Trophy Watch 2015: Why these Top 15 contenders won’t win

Royce Freeman has the unfortunate task of being the guy who follows Oregon’s first ever Heisman winner, Marcus Mariota. The only thing that would be worse for Freeman is if he were a quarterback…although stranger things have happened in Eugene.

Why Freeman won’t win it:
The Ducks are once again going to have a zippy, highlight-reel offense, with lots of explosive plays and shiny new uniforms, but none of that is going to help Freeman.
With Mariota gone, as well as four wide receivers and two running backs, the Ducks are going to be searching for an offensive identity, and chances are that head coach Mark Helfrich is going to want to spread the ball around to lots of different people.
For Oregon, Mariota was the offense because he could do so much both throwing and running the ball. This offense isn’t predicated on having a single fixture (outside of a quarterback) who will get the bulk of the carries or receptions. Freeman simply won’t handle the ball enough to warrant Heisman votes, and if he does, he’ll be out of gas by week nine.
