Heisman Trophy Watch 2015: Why these Top 15 contenders won’t win

Connor Cook probably could win the Heisman if he played for just about any other team. But at Michigan State, he’s A.J. McCarron or Aaron Murray in green and white. A talented quarterback who will never get the recognition.

Why Cook won’t win it:
Cook could probably put up stats that most quarterbacks would be given Heisman consideration for (he’s already done it in the past), and he’s got team leadership qualities down pat. But playing for Michigan State and their humdrum pro-style offense isn’t going to get the voters to look.
Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio isn’t going to do anything out of the ordinary. Like Georgia’s Mark Richt and Alabama’s Nick Saban, he coaches solid fundamental football with no frills.
As an MSU quarterback, your job is to be accurate, play smart, and avoid turnovers. There’s no designed QB breakaways or nifty wrinkles to make SportsCenter highlights. Cook is a solid quarterback, and will probably have a successful NFL career, but he won’t have an opportunity to become a serious Heisman candidate…unless he can upset Ohio State and lead the Spartans to the championship game. Not likely.
