Montana, who wore number three during his playing years with the Fighting Irish from 1975-78, didn’t put up any eye-popping stats, but he did show flashes of what was to come and proved that he was a quarterback who could bring a team back when it was needed.

In 1977, he led the Irish to a national championship that was capped off by a victory over the No. 1 Texas Longhorns in the Cotton Bowl. But beyond winning titles, memorable comebacks were a hallmark of Montana’s career at both Notre Dame and in the NFL.

One of the biggest examples of his ability to lead a team from the depths came during Montana’s senior year in 1978. Down 34-12 in the Cotton Bowl to Houston heading into the fourth quarter, Montana led the Irish to an unbelievable 35-34 victory.

Comeback after comeback, Montana was the man who used his arm to crush the dreams of many an opposing fan. The die was cast, and Montana would be known as one of the greatest comeback quarterbacks to ever suit up, and that groundwork was laid while he was a Golden Domer.
