2. They Have a Real Threat at Quarterback

Bob Stoops recently named Baker Mayfield as the starting quarterback for the Sooners for the 2015 season. Mayfield won a competition with Cody Thomas and Trevor Knight for the starting spot.

As a true freshman at Texas Tech, Mayfield completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 2,314 yards with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions to earn Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors in 2012. He was a walk-on quarterback who beat out a couple of scholarship players to start the first game of his college career against SMU.

Mayfield passed for 413 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in his first college game. He was a star quarterback in high school who as a junior, led Lake Travis (TX) to the 4A state title in 2011. In 2012 passed for 2,497 yards with 24 touchdowns and two interceptions.

He was a three-star recruit who passed over scholarship offers from Florida Atlantic and Rice to walk on at Tech. Mayfield became frustrated with his scholarship situation and decided to transfer to Oklahoma where, due to NCAA rules, he had to sit out the 2014 season.

Mayfield is finally eligible and should excel in a spread offense that is similar to the offense he played at Tech and in high school. His ability to distribute the ball to Oklahoma’s play-makers will make the Sooner offense more dynamic and harder to defend.
