Baker Mayfield beat Trevor Knight for the starting quarterback job and he’s not giving it up after throwing for a program record 388 yards in an opener on 23-of-33 passing. He threw three touchdowns, including one to top junior college transfer Dede Westbrook and one 76-yard score to redshirt freshman Joe Mixon.

The hire of offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley is already looking like a home run of a hire for Bob Stoops and Mayfield looks like the perfect fit to run his system that’s the same offense he ran his freshman year at Texas Tech.

What’s interesting moving forward is how involved Samaje Perine will be in the run game after only getting 11 carries for 33 yards and at touchdown and the team running 33 times for 100 yards. Perine was their offense last year but if the passing game takes off and you add Mixon to complement Perine in the backfield and this offense can go head-to-head with Baylor and TCU.
