Notre Dame RB Tarean Folston out for year with knee injury

Notre Dame will be without starting running back Tarean Folston for the rest of the year after he suffered a torn MCL in the opening win against Texas.

Tarean Folston’s season is over after three carries and 19 yards after Notre Dame’s starting running back injured his knee. On Sunday, the diagnosis came in as head coach Brian Kelly relayed in a teleconference that Folston is lost for the year with a torn MCL.

Folston led the Irish with 889 yards and six touchdowns last year and was expected to be a bigger part of the rushing attack after the loss of Greg Bryant to an academic suspension in the offseason. With Folston out for the year the onus is on C.J. Prosise to assume the featured back role and he filled in nicely in the win against Texas with 20 carries for 98 yards.

But the spotlight will now be shining on a pair of true freshmen to shoulder the load in Josh Adams and Dexter Williams. The former four-star running back recruits got in the action in the opener with Adams rushing for 49 yards and two touchdowns on only five carries and Williams had seven carries for 24 yards. I would expect the duo receives 14-16 carries combined with Prosise getting around 18-20 most weeks depending on the game and opponent.

Notre Dame travels to Virginia next week for the first taste of their ACC portion of their schedule this year but unfortunately for the Irish, they won’t have Folston who is scheduled to undergo surgery in the next 10 days.
