Yeah, they weren’t that impressive against Minnesota, but there’s something to be said for beating a Big Ten team on the road. The Golden Gophers are no slouches either, last season they recorded an 8-5 record.
I’ll give TCU a break this week. Although the offense looked rusty, their defense looked reloaded and ready to go. They only returned 5 starters to the defensive side of the ball, so it was encouraging to see them play well on Thursday.
The TCU defense forced two turnovers, both fumbles, and only let Minnesota convert 4-15 third downs. Getting off the field is the important of the defensive side of the ball, and the Horned Frogs performed well in both categories.
On offense, Trevone Boykin and company racked up 449 total yards. Although that’s a decent number, they often looked sluggish and rusty. TCU lost a fumble and Boykin threw an interception; that won’t fly against Baylor later in the season.
TCU may not have dominated Minnesota, but they still escaped with a victory on the road. The Horned Frogs looked a bit sluggish out of the gate, but they should be able to clean most of it up over the course of the next few games (Steven F. Austin, SMU, Texas Tech, and Texas). The schedule sets up nicely for TCU, they don’t play a top 25 ranked team until they visit Norman, Oklahoma on November 21st. They also get Baylor at home to close out the season.
They weren’t perfect, but TCU is still the best team in the Big 12 after week 1.
