California Golden Bears face litus test vs. rebuilding Texas Longhorns
By Tommy Tabler
The California Golden Bears over the past two weeks have not had a problem putting teams away. The question Cal fans are wondering about is, can the Cal Golden Bears take down Texas?
Sonny Dykes has helped the Golden Bears increase the win total every season he has been in Berkley. The Cal Golden Bears ripped through Grambling State, during the first week of the season and defeated San Diego State 35-7 this weekend.

Cal is starting to show improved play on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. The big test comes this weekend against a Texas team that is struggling but still showed some fight against Rice. Golden Bears’ fans are waiting to see what quarterback Jared Goff will do next. In the past two games, Goff has passed for 630 yards and 6 touchdowns.
According to Vavel.com’s Mitchell Evans, “Goff is looking he could be an underrated Heisman contender this season.” Goff has played well and a win against Texas could bolster his resume as Pac-12 play draws closer. The passing game seems to be starting to click and Texas could have some problems against the Golden Bears’ tempo.
The Golden Bears are continuing to implement running back Daniel Lasco in an increased role.
Lasco has played well the past two games and has the potential to gash the Longhorns, if Texas is too focused on the pass. Lasco and Khalfani Muhammad could be a dangerous one-two punch if Dykes chooses to use both against Texas. Dykes is an aggressive coach and will likely lean more toward the pass, but Texas will need to keep an eye out for Lasco and Muhammad.
Texas was able to defeat Rice on Saturday, but the defense struggled. The Longhorns’ defense gave up 28 points to the Rice Owls and could be in serious trouble against Cal. Texas missed tackles on Saturday night and if they do so again it could be a very long game against the Golden Bears. The offense performed a little better but Texas is still a work in progress. The Cal-Texas game is shaping up to be a measuring stick for both teams.
