Jim Harbaugh wants Michigan to play Notre Dame again

Michigan and Notre Dame rekindling their rivalry sounds like it’s going to happen.

We’ve seen the death of some of college football’s greatest rivalries due to conference realignment in recent years like Texas-Texas A&M, Nebraska-Oklahoma, Kansas-Missouri and Pitt-West Virginia. But we’ve also seen the last scheduled meeting between two of the blue bloods in college football with Michigan and Notre Dame ending their 128-year relationship after the 2014 game.

However, there could be a reconciliation based on comments from Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh and Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly who are open to the idea of playing again and sound optimistic it’s going to happen, at some point in the near future.

“I’d probably have a conversation with coach [Brian] Kelly about that before anyone else, that’d be the best course of action,” Harbaugh said on the Big Ten coaches’ teleconference, per MLive.com. “But I would be open to it, yes.”

And why wouldn’t he be open to it? Michigan and Notre Dame on the same field together is one of the great sights in the history of the sport.

“I think that’s something that everybody wants to get going and get Michigan back on the schedule,” Kelly said on the Rich Eisen Show. “I think that sentiment is coming back to the forefront of where college football needs to be and some of those classic rivalries coming back together. I know we’re going to be working hard to see if we can get that done.

“I think we’re going to see it happen.”

A week after Pitt and West Virginia agreed to a future four-game series to revive The Backyard Brawl it sounds like we could be one phone call between Harbaugh and Kelly away from another rivalry getting revived.

Of course, it’ll be a little more complicated than the two head coaches talking, but that would be a great start to get the conversation going so they can ultimately give the fans what they want.
