A week ago, Auburn was considered a national championship contender. After narrowly escaping with a 27-20 victory over FCS opponent Jacksonville State in overtime last Saturday, many fans and analysts have already given up on the Tigers.

One of the biggest reasons is the disappointing play of quarterback Jeremy Johnson, who was intercepted twice by the Gamecocks after tossing two picks against Louisville in the season opener.

Speaking of Louisville, Auburn’s 31-24 victory over the Cards doesn’t look nearly as good after they lost to Houston last week. The new-look Auburn defense has also struggled statistically, having allowed 421.5 total yards on average through the first two weeks of the season. With so much trending down, Auburn must travel to one of the most hostile environments in the nation: LSU’s Tiger Stadium, where Auburn hasn’t won since 2001.

LSU is also coming off a close victory, though they had to travel to Starkville to beat a ranked Mississippi State squad 21-19 in what turned out to be the season opener for the Tigers. Thanks to three Leonard Fournette touchdowns, LSU jumped out to a 21-3 lead over the Bulldogs, and held on following a furious comeback attempt by Dak Prescott, which ended with a 52-yard missed field goal attempt as time expired.

Had Auburn not struggled with Jacksonville State, they may be the favorite this weekend and the game would probably be a pick ’em at worst. Therefore, if you believe that Auburn has the talent and coaching to bounce back, this is a game they can win outright. That means the seven points LSU is giving is a bonus.
