The South Carolina Gamecocks took another step back last week with a 26-22 loss to Kentucky in Columbia. Head coach Steve Spurrier lost his starting quarterback, Connor Mitch, to a separated shoulder, which means that Perry Orth will get his first career start Saturday night between the hedges in Athens.

Orth, a former walk-on, almost brought South Carolina back against the Wildcats with 179 passing yards and a touchdown on 13-for-20 passing, though he did throw an interception.

Georgia beat Vanderbilt 31-14, though the game was closer than the final score would indicate and the Bulldogs were a bit sloppy on the road in Nashville. Running back Nick Chubb looked great and gained 189 yards on the ground, but starting quarterback Greyson Lambert struggled and the defense allowed 400 yards of offense to the lowly Commodores. But, they also forced three turnovers, one of them a pick six, and scored a special teams touchdown.

Simply, the Bulldogs are the better team, and that is reflected in the 17-point cushion given to South Carolina. However, the Gamecocks have won three out of four against Georgia, including last year’s 38-35 stunner. Spurrier has long been a thorn in the side of the Dawgs, and it shouldn’t surprise anyone if his team plays very well Saturday. Expect Georgia to win, but not by much.
