Dobbs threw for 232 yards, but only contributed seven yards on the ground on seven carries. Running back Jalen Hurd ran for 90 yards on 19 attempts and Alvin Kamara added 36 rushing yards, but the Vols could only manage 276 yards after their opening drive and wide receiver Preston Williams fumbled away Tennessee’s best scoring chance in the second quarter.

Unbelievably, Tennessee is now 0-2 in conference play for the eighth consecutive season, and the second in a row under head coach Butch Jones. Despite his success on the recruiting trail, and the fact he led the Vols to a bowl game for the first time in four years in 2014, Jones has fallen under heavy scrutiny in recent weeks for his inability to win a big game. Jones is now 15-16 overall in two-plus seasons in Knoxville and just 5-13 in SEC play.

With their backs against the wall again, Tennessee has a chance to get back in the SEC East race next week against Georgia.

Tennessee Vols 2-3 (0-2)

Last week: Lost to Arkansas 24-20
Last rank: 9th

Well, the biggest mistake Tennessee made Saturday against Arkansas was taking an early 14-0 lead. By now – after the Vols squandered two-score leads against Oklahoma and Florida – we know that Tennessee simply cannot function when trying to protect a two-touchdown lead.

The Vols struck immediately when Evan Berry returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. After forcing an Arkansas punt, quarterback Joshua Dobbs took the offense 89 yards down the field on 11 plays on Tennessee’s first offensive possession, and capped off the drive with a seven-yard touchdown run. It would be the final time the Vols found pay dirt.
