Mississippi State may have been expected to finish last in the SEC West this season, but the Bulldogs have already proven they are no pushovers, and they’ve spent the first five weeks of the season jumping in and out of the national rankings.

Led by quarterback Dak Prescott, who has 1,279 passing yards and seven touchdowns this season without an interception (which pushes his active streak to 225 straight attempts without a pick, which is the longest active streak in the nation, a school record, and third all-time in SEC history).

However, Prescott has also been counted on heavily in the run game – and last week in particular. The senior QB ran 18 times for 96 yards and a touchdown in State’s 30-17 loss to Texas A&M, which was the best rushing performance this season for any Mississippi State player. In fact, the Bulldogs have yet to have a running back gain more than 57 rushing yards in a game this season and the unit has averaged just 144.8 yards on the ground per game this year, which ranks No. 12 in the SEC and No. 98 nationally.

This weekend, State will surely try to get the rushing attack going against Troy, who has allowed 29.2 points and nearly 400 yards of total offense in a 1-3 start to the season under first-year head coach Neal Brown. Though the Trojans have also struggled on offense – they’ve scored 21.5 points and gained 299.8 yards of offense per contest thus far – Brown is familiar with Mississippi State having played the Bulldogs in the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Kentucky.

Mississippi State is clearly the better team, and should win easily, but take Troy to cover.
