Now that Michigan and Northwestern both have two losses, the biggest surprise in the Big Ten this season is the Iowa Hawkeyes. Undefeated and playing consistently well, the Hawkeyes have a real chance at landing in the Big Ten Championship.

A balanced offense led by quarterback C.J. Beathard and running back Jordan Canzeri has helped Iowa to its success. Unfortunately for Iowa, Canzeri went out with an ankle injury two weeks ago against Northwestern and isn’t expected to play this week. The good news is that his backup, Akrum Wadley, stepped in and rushed for 204 yards and four touchdowns in the blowout win over the Wildcats.

When the run game isn’t working, it’s Beathard who has led the way. He’s thrown for over 1,400 yards and nine touchdowns this season. His favorite target has been Matt VandeBerg, who leads the team with 41 receptions.

Defense has been the key to Iowa’s success this year, with the Hawkeyes ranking 12th in total defense. Iowa is particularly strong against the run, ranking 3rd and allowing just 74 yards a game.

Maryland has lost four-straight games but came within one point of pulling off an upset over Penn State last week. The Terps are led on offense by dual-threat quarterback Perry Hills, who rushed for 124 yards and threw for another 225 against the Nittany Lions. He scored two touchdowns, but unfortunately accounted for five turnovers.

The Terps rely on their rushing attack to fuel the offense, something that will be very tough against the Hawkeyes. Maryland isn’t good on defense and could have a tough time shutting down the tough Iowa offense.

Home favorites, especially those favored by a big number can be a trap. However, Iowa shouldn’t scare anyone away in this one. The Hawkeyes are still a bit under the radar but have quietly become one of the top teams in the nation. Take the home team and give the points.
