The Kentucky Wildcats are in danger of squandering a strong start for the second straight season. After beginning the year with four wins in their first five games, the Wildcats have dropped five in a row – which is all too similar to last year’s six-game season ending losing streak.
Kentucky lost 27-3 to Georgia last week, and never really challenged the Bulldogs. The biggest issue was an offense that has regressed steadily during the second half of the season.
Quarterback Patrick Towles (2,010 passing yards, 9 TD, 12 INT) has thrown for fewer yards and a lower completion percentage in three straight starts, including last week’s 96-yard, 38.1 percent, two-interception performance. Towles has thrown interceptions in five consecutive starts and has eight picks over that time.
The Wildcats are also struggling on defense, and have allowed 411.9 total yards per game this season. Luckily, Vanderbilt is one the worst offensive teams in the SEC, having scored 14.8 points and gained an average of 339.8 total yards per game this season.
The Commodores have running back Ralph Webb (811 rushing yards, 5 TD), who ran for a 74-yard touchdown last week against Florida and gained 118 rushing yards against the Gators, but Webb is the only real offensive weapon for the struggling Vandy offense.
Vanderbilt has shown significant improvement this season, especially on defense. The Commodores rank among the SEC’s leaders having allowed an average of 17.4 points and 316.1 total yards of offense per game, but because the Commodores have such a difficult time scoring, expect Kentucky to sneak out of Nashville with a close win.
