TCU Football: Trevone Boykin’s injury nearly costs Frogs vs Kansas

The TCU Horned Frogs lost quarterback Trevone Boykin to a high ankle sprain and nearly lost to winless Kansas.

TCU slept through most of this game, which isn’t surprising after a huge loss to Oklahoma State last week. Losing star quarterback Trevone Boykin probably didn’t help either.

Boykin went down early in the 1st quarter with an apparent high ankle injury. The cameras stayed focused on him while he was on the sideline, and it appeared he was still walking gingerly until he was forced to leave in the first half.

It’ll be a huge loss for TCU if he has to miss extended time Josh Doctson also fighting through an injured wrist.

Winless Kansas had not entered halftime with the score tied this entire season, but they did so today. In fact, the last time the Jayhawks weren’t trailing at halftime was last season against TCU.

David Beaty’s team showed fight, something that’s been lacking all season, but ultimately couldn’t overcome TCU’s talent. This was Kansas’ 35th straight loss on the road. I don’t believe in moral victories, but if I did, this would be a perfect example.

Head coach Gary Patterson tried two different quarterbacks in Boykin’s absence, Bram Kohlhausen and Foster Sawyer.

Kohlhausen played okay, completing 13 of 19 passes for 112 yards and an interception. Nothing spectacular, but he didn’t kill the Horned Frogs.

Sawyer looked absolutely miserable starting the second half, he went one of seven passing for 42 yards and 1 touchdown–the only offensive score of the game for TCU. He was ineffective and Kohlhausen, a senior quarterback from Houston, Texas, went back in after initially replacing Boykin.

TCU leaned on running back Aaron Green and the rushing game for most of the game. Green finished with 177 yards on 30 carries, proving that he can be a bell-cow type back for TCU and they may need that with Boykin potentially hobbled the rest of the way and wide receiver Josh Doctson battling a wrist injury.

This was a close call for the Horned Frogs, they would’ve been completely eliminated from Big 12 and playoff contention had they lost. However, it was encouraging to see the team pull itself together at the end without their best player.

Hopefully Boykin will be back soon, for TCU and college football’s sake otherwise this once-promising season will end as the injury bug catches up to them.
