Gildan New Mexico Bowl

  • Who: Rice vs. New Mexico
  • Where: University Stadium, Albuquerque, New Mexico
  • When: Saturday, Dec. 19, 2 p.m. (ABC)

It’s the first bowl game of the year so you don’t need any extra reason to watch. It’ll be the first game since the Army-Navy game on Dec. 12 so you’ll be craving any kind of football you can get.

Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl

  • Who: UCLA vs. San Diego State
  • Where: Sam Boyd Stadium, Las Vegas
  • When: Saturday, Dec. 19, 3:30 p.m. (ABC)

UCLA was thought to be a potential Pac-12 champion and playoff team in the preseason, but injuries have ravaged Jim Mora’s team. I’ll be watching to see true freshman Josh Rosen who may be the most physically gifted quarterback in the country.

Raycom Media Camellia Bowl

  • Who: Buffalo vs. Appalachian State
  • Where: Cramton Bowl, Montgomery, Alabama
  • When: Saturday, Dec. 19, 5:30 p.m. (ESPN)

Appalachian State has done well in the FBS and I like what Lance Leipold has been able to do in his first season at Buffalo after winning six Division III titles with Wisconsin-Whitewater.

AutoNation Cure Bowl

  • Who: Tulsa vs. Georgia Southern
  • Where: Orlando Citrus Bowl, Orlando, Florida
  • When: Saturday, Dec. 19, 7 p.m. (CBSSN)

Tulsa can air it out and Georgia Southern runs the option. This should be a fun one to watch. Tulsa should be able to benefit by having ample practice time to scheme against the option attack.

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl

  • Who: Southern Miss vs. South Alabama
  • Where: Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans
  • When: Saturday, Dec. 19, 9 p.m. (ESPN)

It’s been a nice resurgent year for Southern Miss and they’ll get a chance to play on primetime against South Alabama as a pair of small schools get their time in the spotlight on the opening night of bowl season.
