Aside from Ole Miss-LSU, the game between Arkansas and Mississippi State should be the best matchup of the week in the SEC. Arkansas is red-hot following four straight victories, having scored 31 points or more in all four games and surpassing 50 points three times. The Razorbacks have been most impressive in back-to-back road wins over Ole Miss and LSU, including a 31-14 whipping of the Tigers last Saturday night in Baton Rouge.
Quarterback Brandon Allen (2,617 passing yards, 22 TD, 6 INT) and wide receiver Drew Morgan (45 receptions, 639 receiving yards, 9 TD) have become one of the SEC’s top passing duos, though Allen has plenty of weapons including Hunter Henry (490 receiving yards, 1 TD), Dominique Reed (425 receiving yards, 6 TD) and Jared Cornelius (277 receiving yards, 2 TD this season, plus a 69-yard TD run last week).
Of course, the Hogs also have running back Alex Collins, who has gained 1,209 rushing yards and 14 TDs this year. Plus, the Arkansas defense showed improvement by containing Leonard Fournette to just 91 rushing yards last week – the second worst total of the season for the early season Heisman front-runner.
Mississippi State will pose a challenge, especially in the passing game. Quarterback Dak Prescott (2,651 passing yards, 18 TD, 2 INT; 432 rushing yards, 7 TD) and the Bulldogs were blown out 31-6 by Alabama last week, but have still managed to post impressive offensive numbers, including an average of 438.4 total yards per game despite the lack of a consistent threat at running back. However, with leading receiver De’Runnya Wilson banged up last week against the Tide, the offense may not be at full strength.
With Arkansas riding so much momentum and with the home field advantage, take the Hogs to cover.
