8. Nebraska (5-6, 3-4)
The Huskers’ season of misery gained a much-needed reprieve with a 38-36 upset of Michigan State. For once it was Nebraska that made the key play against incredible odds. Though impossible to meet the standards and expectations measured by records and titles, Mike Riley’s team can provide Husker faithful with another proud moment and lasting memory with an upset of 11-0 Iowa. The Hawkeyes are doing all the little things that the Huskers are doing all wrong all season long. There is no talent disparity between the two clubs and the game is at Memorial Stadium. Don’t be shocked if the Black Shirts show up.
7. Penn State (7-4, 4-3)
The Nittany Lions have found a place smack dab in the middle of the Big Ten. Penn State’s four conference wins have come against teams with a combined Big Ten record of 4-24. On the flip side, Penn State still can’t beat the big boys; having lost to Ohio State, Michigan and Northwestern (17-4). Therefore, the trip to Michigan State is James Franklin’s last chance to prove that this program has advanced.
