Amos Alonzo Stagg coached football from 1890-1958 and even dabbled in coaching basketball and baseball. He was also the first paid coach in football history.
Not only does he have 314 wins to his name, Stagg helped develop some of modern football’s most common strategies. He was the first to use a man in motion and he helped develop the lateral pass.
He spent most of his coaching career with the University of Chicago and built his legacy there. He won seven Big Ten championships and two national championships during his time with the Maroons.
The Division III National Championship is named after him — the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. Later in his life, he was dubbed “The Grand Old Man of Football” by his peers. Stagg’s legacy is sure to outlive him; he is one of college football’s many legends.
