Mack Brown took the Longhorns to two national championships, winning one, and dominated their home state in recruiting, which made Texas one of the best programs of the early 21st century.
Brown had 20 consecutive winning seasons during his time at North Carolina and later at Texas, he had a streak of 18 consecutive bowl game appearances and 162 consecutive weeks ranked in the AP Top 25. Ricky Williams won the Heisman Trophy during Brown’s tenure at Texas, and three players–Ricky Williams, Vince Young, and Colt McCoy–won the Maxwell Award.
Most importantly, Brown was a combined 32-17 combined against Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas Tech during his time at Texas. The Longhorns churned out tons of NFL talent under Brown like Earl Thomas, Jamaal Charles, and Derrick Johnson.
While he’s mostly remembered for his time at Texas, it would be silly not to mention the success Brown had as head coach at North Carolina. Overall, he finished 69-46-1 at UNC, including three 10-win seasons. He coached the Tar Heels to five consecutive bowl games from 1992-1997.
Mack Brown created a winning culture at North Carolina and Texas, and should be viewed as one of the best coaches in either team’s history.
