Hugh Green came as close as any defensive player had ever come to winning the Heisman when the Pitt defensive end finished as the runner-up to South Carolina running back George Rogers in 1980 as a senior. Green had 123 tackles, 11 for loss, 17 sacks, seven forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and six passes defended.

While Green didn’t win the Heisman, he did win the Lombardi, Maxwell and Walter Camp Player of the Year Award and was a consensus All-American for the third time. He was a second-team All-American as a freshman after notching 12 sacks.

Green left Pitt with 460 tackles, 52 tackles for loss, 53 career sacks, 24 forced fumbles and 13 fumble recoveries. Green was the No. 7 pick int he 1981 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
