Picking the returner for this team was one of the toughest calls for this all-time team. From guys like Notre Dame’s Raghib Ismail and Tim Brown to Miami’s Devin Hester to Kentucky’s Derek Abney to Michigan’s Desmond Howard, there isn’t a shortage of qualified candidates.

Ultimately, I went with two-time consensus All-American and 1972 Heisman winner from Nebraska, Johnny Rodgers who returned a then-record seven punts for touchdowns in his three years with the Huskers.

One of his punt returns came in the Game of the Century against rival Oklahoma in 1971 when he had a 72-yard return to set up the game’s first score in Nebraska’s 35-31 win. Rodgers also had one kick return for a touchdown and set an NCAA career record for all-purpose yards with 5,586.

He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
