NFL Draft: 25 best first overall picks of all-time
By Gabe Encinas
Charley Trippi was a true dual-threat quarterback, who might have been the first of his kind in the NFL. Serving as a quarterback and running back, Trippi played his college ball at Georgia, earning consensus All-American honors and was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
In 1945, the Chicago Cardinals landed him, where he served all nine seasons of his career. There he made an immediate impact, leading the Cardinals to an NFL Championship his rookie season. He was named All-Pro that season, as well as the 1948 and 1952 seasons.
He accumulated 3,506 yards on the ground with 23 touchdowns. He also threw for 2,547 yards and 16 touchdowns. But his work didn’t stop there; he also hauled in 1,321 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns.
With all his work on the offensive side of the ball, Charley Trippi will go down as one of the best utility players in NFL history.
