No. 7 – Blocks Below The Waist

They’re doing away with it in the NFL, and they need to do away with it in college. We’re talking about “cut blocks” (as the option coaches like to label them) or blocks below the waist.

We’ve seen far too often the devastating effect of hits to the legs and knees, and there’s absolutely no reason to allow it to happen when it involves 350-pound linemen. If the NCAA wants to protect the players and talk about safety, then this is a rule that can help that cause.

Chop blocks (blocking below the waist on a player who is already engaged in an above-waist block) are already illegal, and it’s time to make these running cut blocks a thing of the past as well.

Thankfully this is a rule that is being examined this year for possible change. Should the rule change take effect, then any blocks below the waist would be disallowed and penalized with the exception of in-close line play immediately after the snap.
