SEC Football: Ranking the best coaching jobs
12. Mississippi State Bulldogs
The Mississippi State Bulldogs are currently in the middle of a Golden Age of football in Starkville with head coach Dan Mullen leading the way. Prior to Mullen’s arrival, winning 6-7 games would be cause for a celebration and a parade through downtown. Now, anything less than 8-9 wins is a disappointment so there’s something to be said for the job he’s done.
But if he were to leave, Mississippi State goes back to the bottom of the SEC West standings where they routinely finished. The stadium is one of the smallest in the SEC, the money isn’t there like it is at bigger programs and the school has to directly compete with Ole Miss for recruits.
Mississippi State is not a destination job. It’s a stepping stone job, and that’s why Mullen has been rumored to higher-profile jobs for the last four years. It’s a job that will not attract the most desirable of candidates and fairly or unfairly has to fight the stigma of being the “little brother” in its own state.
