College Football Commissioner: Is one needed and who would be best?
No. 4: Mark Richt – Head Football Coach, University of Miami (Fl)
Even those who take shots at Richt as a big-game coach have to admit that his character can never come under attack.
Obviously Richt would have to leave his post at Miami to take this position, and given his past statements about prefering coaching to working in college athletics administration he might not even be interested in the job.
“I’m looking forward to coaching again in terms of being more hands on. I miss coaching quarterbacks, I miss calling plays, I miss that part of it. Whether it’s in the role of head coach, coordinator, quarterbacks coach, whatever it is…” Richt said after being fired at Georgia last year.
But if there is anyone who would see to it that rules are applied fairly to all teams and that players, coaches and administrators were held accountable for their decisions and actions, it would be Mark Richt.
Richt is respected by peers, loved by players, and has the moral compass needed to lead college football in the right direction. His experience at three large programs (Florida State, Georgia and Miami) who all have experience a myriad of issues while he was there give him some special insight into the pitfalls that can occur.
