Week 3 result – 34-10 loss to Western Michigan

After starting off the season strong, Illinois has shown it was nothing but rookie luck in 2016. Lovie Smith may be the best thing that could have happened to Illinois, but it’s clear that time is the biggest factor in the Fighting Illini’s success.

The lack of a strong running game was a significant factor this week. Ke’Shawn Vaughn has been a major contributor to Illinois’ offense this season. Bur in Week 3, Western Michigan was able to shut him out, which ultimately eliminated their entire offense.

Illinois has shown over the last two weeks that they aren’t ready to win yet. It could be a few years before they take on the Big Ten in full force.
