After Clemson’s near-miss of a national championship against Alabama in last year’s College Football Playoff final, it is hard to forget that this is the same program for which the pejorative “Clemsoning” transcended the sports world to gain an Urban Dictionary entry. But Clemson fans have had to endure plenty of heartache over the past decade to get to a point where they are now a perennial contender.
The 2006 season saw fans pack Memorial Stadium to 103.4 percent of capacity even as the Tigers frittered away three of their last four games to fall out of the ACC race after climbing to 11th in the polls. The next year Clemson lost twice at home in front of stands filled beyond capacity to once again miss out on playing for an ACC championship. Fans scaled back expectations, yet attendance never dropped below 93 percent as more than 75,000 faithful showed up for each home game.
As we saw at least year’s title game at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, Clemson can draw plenty of support even across the country. With Dabo Swinney at the helm they will likely continue to remain competitive enough to keep fans rabidly loyal.
