Seasons Over 100% Capacity: 7
Virginia Tech fans born after 1986 have known only one head coach for their entire lifetimes until Justin Fuente took over this season. That consistency surely helped shape their loyalties to the Hokies, whose rise under Frank Beamer mirrored the fan base’s rise to national prominence. By 2006 Virginia Tech arrived in the ACC and fans were turning out full force. The Hokies dominated play with four conference crowns and six division titles in eight years.
The fans kept coming in 2012, selling out Lane Stadium for every game of a disappointing 6-6 regular season. The following year, some fans seemed to wonder whether Beamer and the VT program was still worth their loyalty and began to stay away, and since 2013 the average attendance has declined with each passing year. Periodic droughts were forgiveable, but systemic failings have not been for this fan base.
The hope for Virginia Tech, then, is not only that Justin Fuente can help the Hokies reclaim ACC supremacy soon but also that he can start winning back wavering fans. While VT supporters have had plenty of reason to keep following their school over the Beamer era, Fuente must give them reason to keep supporting the maroon and burnt orange.
