Few popular songs are as closely identified with a specific fan base as the link between House of Pain’s “Jump Around” and Wisconsin Badgers fans. Before the start of every fourth quarter, the 80,000-plus fans in Camp Randall Stadium rock the venue to its foundation as they dance to the popular early-1990s hip hop song. Cancelled after 2003 renovations without informing the fans, students lobbied to reinstate the tradition after just one game.
It is just one sign of the dynamic contribution provided by Wisconsin’s fans, who have been packing Camp Randall even after its capacity grew by several thousand seats in the mid-2000s. By 2006, capacity was pegged at its present space for 80,321 fans, and the tickets kept selling. The frequent coaching shifts in recent years have somewhat hurt attendance, as fans question the direction of the program, but the downswing has also come as a result of some uninspired scheduling against lower-tier opponents.
While Wisconsin has fallen back in the Big Ten pack in recent years, the fans have retained their loyalty to Bucky Badger and the cardinal and white. With Paul Chryst, a Madison native, now at the helm, their loyalty will likely not be tested by a new coach for years to come.
