Even before Urban Meyer came to Columbus there was plenty to celebrate for fans of the Ohio State Buckeyes. The team played in three BCS title games and won the inaugural College Football Playoff in 2014. Like several other schools on this list, Ohio State has supercharged its seating in the 21st century to accommodate a diehard group of supporters, expanding from less than 90,000 in 1999 to a stated capacity of 104,944 by 2014. As the Horseshoe has grown, Buckeyes fans have been there over the years to pack Ohio Stadium beyond whatever seating is available.
And yet that has not always equated to sellouts, as Ohio State has undersold at least one home game against a mid-major or FCS opponent in each of the past five seasons including 2016. Even recognizing that fact, attendance has topped 103,000 in every game for over a decade, and now that the expanded Ohio Stadium provides Buckeyes fans with another opportunity to compete against “That School Up North” attendance has continued to climb in each of the past three years.
On any given Saturday, Ohio Stadium becomes the seventh largest city in the Buckeye State. Just as Ohio State always seems to be in the thick of the Big Ten race and the national conversation, so too are their fans among the most rabid in college football.
