Oklahoma fans have had plenty to celebrate in the past decade, winning all or part of six Big 12 titles over that 10-year stretch. The Sooners have also had two chances to play for a national championship during that span, losing to Alabama in the 2009 BCS National Championship Game and losing last year’s College Football Playoff semifinal against Clemson at the Orange Bowl. So expectations have been high, as they are always prone to be for a school with such a storied history.
That said, the fans in Norman have done their part, remaining loyal even despite the disappointment of coming oh-so-close on so many occasions only to continue suffering a final letdown. Nearly 10,000 seats were added on to Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium between 2003 and 2004, increasing capacity to 82,112 at the site. Over the past decade the Sooners sold nearly 3,000 more tickets than the capacity of the venue, and more than 85,000 people regularly pack the stadium on game days.
The flood of fans prompted another expansion in advance of the 2016 home opener against UL-Monroe. The official capacity, now set at 84,389, was still exceeded by 2,700 fans, and the stadium was packed to 104.2 percent of capacity for the showcase game against Ohio State. Every home weekend Memorial Stadium is draped full-force in crimson and cream as fans overfill the stands to cheer on their beloved Sooners.
