The Boise State Broncos are a modern Cinderella success story, having transitioned from the I-AA ranks two decades ago to win three Fiesta Bowls and regularly compete for invites to premier bowl games over the past 10 years. Though they are a mid-major school competing in a Group of Five conference, the fans have boisterously supported their team both at home on the Smurf Turf of Albertsons Stadium and on the road.
Only once has Boise State’s attendance dipped below a 90 percent average, and a lack of success wasn’t to blame as the 2014 Broncos won their third Fiesta Bowl over Arizona. More likely was the fact that fans were left with a feeling of uncertainty after Chris Petersen, their longtime head coach, finally decided to part ways for a Power Five position at Washington. And due to expansion that average of “just” 89.3 percent meant that more people attended per game than the 100-plus capacity seasons of 2006 through 2008.
It remains to be seen what might happen to see how loyal Boise State’s fans would remain after an extended period of misfortunes. Over the past decade, though, the growth curve of the program and the continued demand for tickets and seating for Broncos games means that right now the school and its fans have played their way into the top 30.
