Upset Watch: Possible Week 4 Mid-Major and FCS Upsets
By Zach Bigalke
Vanderbilt Commodores at Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (Saturday/4:30 pm)
Other than a 47-24 win over a Middle Tennessee team that is improving but not yet a contender in Conference USA, what has inspired about Vanderbilt’s season? The 162 rushing yards they gain per game rates outside the top 75 at the FBS level. The passing game has been even worse, ranking better than just a handful of other teams. The defense has been bending but not breaking, allowing over 430 yards per game to opponents but just 25 points.
The Commodores will have to do a lot of bending if they have a shot at beating Western Kentucky on Saturday in Bowling Green. The Hilltoppers lost at Alabama, but they have all the tools to dominate Conference USA again this year. Mike White is ranked in the top 20 in passing efficiency and throwing for over 300 yards per game. Against a mediocre pass defense like Vanderbilt, Jeff Brohm’s aerial attack could really take flight.
