The Cougars have been the best Group of Five team since Tom Herman took over head coaching duties. Last year they rolled to a victory over Florida State in the Peach Bowl, and this year they are on track for a Cotton Bowl berth. Last week against an overmatched Texas State team, Greg Ward Jr. completed 77 percent of his passes for 289 and two touchdowns and added another rushing score. The Cougars’ defense allowed just 142 total yards.

Next week Houston hosts UConn, before traveling to Annapolis on October 8 for a West Division showdown with Navy. If the Cougars can just reach the end of October without slipping, their road game against SMU is their last for over a month. In between they face UCF, Tulane, and then ACC contender Louisville in a major statement opportunity. If they knock off the Cardinals and travel to Memphis for the Black Friday regular-season finale undefeated, Houston could be in the College Football Playoff conversation.
